Reinforcement in flexible offshore pipelines
An important new development in the offshore industry is reinforcing flexible offshore pipelines with carbon strips. Due to the increasing demand for new oil and gas reserves, oil companies are always looking for further and deeper offshore areas. Therefore, ever higher demands are made of the pipelines that transport the oil or gas to the mainland. Weight, strength and chemical resistance play an important part.
A new development is the use of composite profiles as reinforcement material in the pipelines. Carbon strips are delivered on rolls to the manufacturer of the pipelines who, in a continuous process, wraps them from various angles in the multilayer skin of the pipeline. The wrapped carbon reinforcement provides the pipeline with the necessary radial strength while the pipeline remains flexible in axial direction.
